Beda Herbison
Beda Herbison, MSW, LICSW, WA State, worked as a medical social worker, where she was primarily at the Veteran’s Administration. After 7 years of supervising Shanti volunteers who worked at the local jail and prisons providing emotional support to inmates, including those who experienced solitary confinement, funding dried up. Though the program was unfunded, she continues to provide support and supervision for these volunteers.
Barbara Kasper
Barbara Kasper, MA, MSW, is an associate professor of social work at the College of Brockport. Kasper is a founding member of the Women’s Center and the faculty advisor to the Student Social Work Organization and has been involved in organizing such events as Truth Commissions on Poverty and Homelessness, the Take Back the Night March, Rochester Slut Walk, campus-based Tent City events, and Poverty Reality Tours. She is a member of the National Steering Committee of the Social Welfare Action Alliance, an organization of progressive human service workers and also co-chairs the Rochester SWAA chapter.
Willow Katz
Willow Katz is a family member and loved one of people formerly incarcerated in juvenile hall, jail, prison, and solitary confinement. An anti-racist, antiwar grassroots activist since the 1960’s, she supports domestic and global liberation movements. The California Prisoner Hunger Strikes of 2011 and 2013 and the prisoners’ 2012 Agreement to End Hostilities across racial/ethnic and geographic lines inspired Willow to form End Solitary Santa Cruz County, and to join California Families Against Solitary Confinement, the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition, and SWASC.
Bonnie Kerness
Bonnie Kerness has been an anti-racist activist since she was 14. She has served as a human rights advocate on behalf of prisoners in numerous capacities. As the Coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee’s Prison Watch Program she has developed programs and published resources, testimonies, a play and a survivors’ manual. afscprisonwatch.webs.com
Marilyn Montenegro
Marilyn Montenegro, PhD, MSW, was inducted into the California Social Work Hall of Distinction in 2014, and was the recipient of NASW’s 2002 Social Worker of the Year Award for her outstanding work, including working to protect prisoners from abuse and inhumane conditions. As founder and coordinator of the Prison Project, Women’s Council of NASW-CA, she provides consultation and supervises students in programs serving women leaving prison. www.naswdc.org
