Description
This webinar will provide an overview of solitary confinement which is described as torturous by the United Nations. It will include aspects of solitary confinement in the United States, including its connection to racism and the overall carceral system. The focus of the webinar will be SWASC’s efforts to pass a piece of NY legislation–and the first bill of its kind–which would prohibit healthcare professionals from participating in the torture and improper treatment of incarcerated people. Interactive activities around this work will include how to propose legislation and engage in legislative efforts, how to inspire and connect with individuals, communities, and organizations, and a call to action.
Target Audience
This live interactive webinar is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will learn to state what solitary confinement is, as well as its use(s) and prevalence.
Share in describing and interrogating the roles of social workers and health professionals in carceral institutions.
Articulate the necessity of legislation in support of social workers in corrections and upholding the human rights of incarcerated people.
Describe Social Workers & Allies Against Solitary Confinement (SWASC)’s legislative effort in NY State.

Presenter Bios
Nicole Capozziello, MSW, is a doctoral candidate at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, where she has worked with people who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system as an advocate, writer, and researcher. She is an active member of the WNY chapter of the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement, and is the co-director of Social Workers & Allies Against Solitary Confinement.
Mary Buser, LCSW, is the author of the award-winning book, Lockdown on Rikers: Shocking Stories of Abuse and Injustice at New York’s Notorious Jail, which is based on her work as an assistant mental health chief at Rikers Island. After leaving Rikers, she became an advocate for the incarcerated, especially the mentally ill and those held in solitary confinement. She received her MSW from Columbia University and is the Co-director of Social Workers & Allies Against Solitary Confinement.
