Description
In the United States, there are an estimated 122,000 people in solitary confinement in our prisons, jails, and other correctional institutions. Most Americans, including healthcare professionals, remain largely uneducated about this torturous practice and the ways in which it is racialized. During this webinar, presenters will provide data, personal accounts, reflection, and discussion designed to illuminate myths and realities of race and solitary confinement in the United States.
Target Audience
This live interactive webinar is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's and Addiction Professionals.
PLEASE NOTE: At this time, we are only able to provide CE credit to professionals licensed in New York State.

Learning Objectives
Attendees will be able to articulate the historical movements to oppress Black people- enslavement, Jim Crow, mass incarceration, solitary-and their interconnections.
Develop a better understanding of the various impacts of oppression on Black people.
Understand these impacts from first person accounts.
Describe the reasons people can be placed in solitary and how these may be disproportionately inflicted on Black people.

Presenter Bios
Earl Smith, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Sociology and the Rubin Distinguished Professor of American Ethnic Studies at Wake Forest University. He is the author of several books, most recently Way Down in the Hole. Race, Intimacy, and the Reproduction of Racial Ideologies in Solitary Confinement (2023).
Angela Hattery, PhD, is professor of women and gender studies and co-director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Gender Based Violence at the University of Delaware. She is the author of several books, most recently Way Down in the Hole. Race, Intimacy, and the Reproduction of Racial Ideologies in Solitary Confinement (2023).
Marvin Wade is a justice impacted individual who was released from prison in 2019 after 25 years incarcerated. He was born in 1970, Brooklyn NY, to a single mother of 3. Marvin is a gifted and accomplished writer of published work that you can read in publications such as the Project Mend Journal and Voices of fortune. As a Prison and Social Advocate, as well as a Spiritual Activist, Marvin believes that his purpose in life is to be that light for those to finding their true self and path in life.
